Congratulations to Matthew Downing - 2010 Taste of the West ‘South West Chef of the Year’

On October 7th the corridors of West Hill Primary School were filled with the smell of fresh bread as Matthew showed the 30 children of Key Stage 1 how to make bread.

During the morning the children helped to mix the flour, knead the dough, roll it out into different shapes and heard from Matthew about how the yeast works. The freshly baked bread was then served with a pumpkin soup for lunch.

Matthew said “The children loved the hands on experience with the bread. Most of them said they’d had toast for breakfast, so it was nice for them to learn about where it comes from and how it is made.”
